🇬🇧 Set in Edinburgh in the years leading to Second World War, Muriel Spark’s masterpiece, The Prime…, tells the story of the eponymous teacher Jean Brodie and the girls comprising the so-called Brodie set: Sandy, Rose, Mary, Jenny, Monica and Eunice. With a seemingly simple style, the novel dwells on a nostalgic story of the olden days of childhood, reflecting on the growing pains of adolescence in the context of a fast-changing world. But the Prime is also a book about the personal secrets of adulthood, about loyalty and treason, about education in the modern and contemporary world, as well as the politics of charisma and emotion. Lastly, it is also, as Dame Muriel Spark used to say, a “love letter to Edinburgh” and modern Scotland overall.
🇪🇸 Ambientada en Edimburgo durante los años inmediatamente anteriores a la segunda guerra mundial, la obra maestra de Muriel Spark, El esplendor…, narra la historia de la epónima profesora, Jean Brodie, y las niñas que conforman el “grupo de Brodie”: Sandy, Rose, Mary, Jenny, Monica y Eunice. En un estilo aparentemente sencillo, la novela dispone una historia nostálgica sobre los días dorados de la infancia, al tiempo que medita sobre las crecientes vicisitudes de la adolescencia en el contexto de un mundo cambiante por momentos. Pero El esplendor… también es un libro sobre los secretos personales de la edad adulta, sobre la lealtad y la traición, sobre la educación en el mundo moderno y contemporáneo o la política del carisma y las emociones. Por último, también es, como solía decir Dame Muriel Spark, “una carta de amor” a Edimburgo y a la Escocia moderna en general.
