🇬🇧 Thomas Hardy’s first major novel revolves around the character of Bathsheba Everdeen, a strong woman determined to salvage the farm she got from her uncle, and her three suitors, Gabriel Oak, Mr. Bolwood and Sgt. Troy, each one embodying different types of love. Yet far being from the archetypical romance, Far from the Madding Crowd is also an insightful and complex novel about perseverance, loyalty, honour, passion and obsession. It is also Hardy’s first novel set in Wessex, the fictional and mythic counterpart of Southwest England that undercuts the traditional nineteenth-century idyllic pastoral setting and transforms it into a place where feeling, harshness, hope and tragedy coexist.

Pero lejos de ser un romance al uso, Far from the Madding Crowd es también una novela esclarecedora y compleja sobre la perseverancia, la lealtad, las pasiones y las obsesiones. También constituye la primera novela de Hardy ambientada en Wessex, el trasunto ficticio y mítico del suroeste de Inglaterra, que cuestiona y deconstruye el clásico escenario pastoral e idílico de la novela decimonónica, transformándolo en un lugar donde sentimiento y esperanza conviven con hostilidad y tragedia.
